When GenAI and disco blend, a dolead song emerges to celebrate. Click to laugh and appreciate this token of gratitude.

This is part of a series about GenAI real business cases. Here’s an article about the Gen AI hackathons we’ve organised at Dolead.

‍

‍

Below's the true story of how we wrote and produced a heroic song for (and about) our Facebook Ads rep.

A little context first.

The year is 2022.

‍

We decide to take a “White knight” posture on the tracking

We, Doleaders, often refer to ourselves as the “white knights” 🙂 It’s a humorous, self-deprecating name, but, as usual, it is rooted in reality.

Let me explain. The truth is that we operate in an industry (digital marketing, lead generation) where there are still a number of shady practices - that even some of our competitors employ. We refuse to do this, even if sometimes it costs us. We want to be the “white knights” of the lead generation.

Following up on our philosophy and also in the spirit of GDPR, we decide to:

  • remove all online tracking from our Landing Pages (JS tracking)
  • remove all cross-network tracking (ex: Google “seeing” traffic from Facebook, Google analytics etc.)
  • only keep the absolute minimum tracking: when a user becomes an MQL (see below) - as we can’t operate CPA Ad Campaigns without this

To improve the performance of our campaigns, we also have gone lower down the funnel: we only inform the network on a “MQL” (a Marketing Qualified Lead) - meaning, only on a user that filled in the form AND that, following her answers, we can connect her to a brand / a service provider.

‍

We’re caught in the middle of Apple and Facebook giant wars

The iOS14 / ATT bomb

Apple’s iOS 14 update changed everything. With App Tracking Transparency (ATT), apps needed explicit user consent for tracking. This hit Facebook hard, shaking the digital advertising world.

Facebook scrambled to adapt, introducing the Aggregated Event Measurement protocol. But it was messy—full of bugs and endless configurations. Data Attribution visibility? Almost non-existent. Facebook lost a lot of money as advertisers struggled to navigate these new waters.

Struggling with Attribution and SupportFor Dolead, reliant on offline conversions, this was a nightmare. At one point, 50% of our conversions went unattributed. Optimizing campaigns and justifying ad spend became a Herculean task.

And getting support from Facebook? We were stuck in an endless loop of canned responses and outdated documentation. It felt like navigating a maze with no way out.

But we stayed true to our "white knight" approach, refusing to cut corners.

‍

A pact is forged with out Meta representative

Enter Nancy Ellatar, our superhero Meta (formerly Facebook) representative in Ireland. Nancy fought like a warrior through layers of corporate red tape. We were included in multiple Facebook tech programs and had the chance to speak to some brilliant engineers from their tech teams.

(Shoutout also to Horia Toma from Engineering - that also pushed us in the right direction)

I remember that once, when things looked really grim for us, I told her: “Nancy, if we ever get out of this Offline Conversions nightmare, I’ll write a song in your honor.”

‍

We finally beat the Offline Conversions monster

Persistence pays off! With tiny, incremental updates, we slowly but surely fixed our data link.

Not only that, but, since we had a 99% attribution rate - the highest in all Europe, in our category, we were told (and, probably made some noise internally at Facebook :)) ), we got included in a very special program - the Signals Roadshow (only 5 companies in the world were selected).

Imagine this: a room filled with 25 engineers, product managers, and directors working on Facebook Ads (the “money makers”). We had a two-hour deep dive into the future of bidding and tracking on Facebook Ads. But that’s a story for another time.

‍

A promise is a promise.

And Nancy fully deserved it.

So, with a little help from ChatGPT and from Fiverr..

Lyrics

Verse 1

At first I was afraid, I was petrified,

Kept thinking that our offline data couldn’t be rectified,

But then Nancy came along, put us into beta's stride,

Added us to Meta Partner program, oh, what a ride!

Verse 2

She gathered her strength, didn't let things depart,

Played an instrumental role, safeguarding our monetary heart,

Introduced us to Horia, an engineer so fine,

Nancy Ellatar, oh, you made us shine!

Chorus

She said, go on, switch on the screen,

The Meta world’s a jungle and it is time to intervene,

She took our offline conversions and brought them back to life,

Did you think she'd stumble?

Did you think she'd let us dive?

Oh no, not she, she made us thrive,

Oh, as long as we still have Nancy, we know we're in our prime,

She's got all her wits to give,

And she's got all her skills to live,

We will sure thrive, with Nancy’s drive, hey, hey.

You can listen to it here:

Because, of course the song was, well, sang!

Enjoy!

Behind the Scenes

Some ChatGPT prompt engineering taming

Played a little bit with the prompt. Asked:

  • To tell the story
  • To be heroic
  • To be funny

Of course, this was just the first variant; I continued to iterate and polish the lyrics - until I was happy with the result.

‍

Fiverr freelancers

Now, mind that we’re in june 2023 - so AI voice models that sing are not that advanced; Therefore, I turned to Fiverr for actually producing the song.

Shoutout to Gautam for his great performance!

‍

How would I do this today?

I would give a try to AI Gen models that can sing. That would be a funny idea.
